We’ve all heard the saying, ‘glowing skin starts from within.’ What you put into your body everyday plays a huge role in the health of your skin. Eating a clean, balanced diet is so important to achieving that youthful, dewy glow, and foods that are rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins such as vitamin C, E and zinc are weekly must-haves. Try adding these foods to your shopping list to support optimal skin health.

SALMON

Not only is it delicious, salmon is rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids such as omega-3. Omega-3 is so great for the skin because it can help calm inflammation, which can lead to the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Having the right amount of good fat in your diet can help protect the skin’s barrier and keep moisture in. Salmon is also a great source of protein, zinc and vitamin E. A total skin saviour!


TOMATOES A recent study by the British Journal of Dermatology found that tomatoes can help protect the skin against sun damage. Tomatoes are rich in an antioxidant called lycopene, which is the key to tomato’s sun protection benefits. Lycopene improves skin texture and prevents photodamage.


WALNUTS Walnuts are incredible for collagen production as they are high in omega-3 and 6 fatty acids. They are also high in zinc; a mineral essential for healthy skin barrier functioning, wound healing and combating both infection and inflammation. Try adding them to your smoothies or favourite salad.


BROCCOLI Rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals, broccoli is great for skin health as it contains lutein, which can help protect the skin from oxidative damage which can lead to dryness and wrinkles. Broccoli also contains zinc, vitamin A and vitamin C which are essential to optimal skin functioning.


BLUEBERRIES Blueberries are known for their disease fighting powers! They are high in antioxidants, such as anthocyanins and vitamin C, which are known to assist with fighting free radicals. Anthocyanin is thought to support collagen synthesis, and the rich concentration of vitamin C and K found in blueberries is beneficial for wound healing. They are also full of fibre – which is essential for a healthy gut microbiome and skin health.
